NBA Basketball Pick 3-31-10

My NBA pick for 3-31-10 is:

New York Knicks at Portland Trailblazers – 10:05 p.m. ET

Bet #526 Portland Trailblazers -11

Riding the red-hot Blazers in the Rose Garden tonight. Portland has won of eight of their last nine and they’re 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven. Their only loss during that stretch came against the Suns in Phoenix, who are currently on the league’s longest win streak. The Blazers were on the road for two games prior to tonight’s home contest, and they go back on the road for three more after tonight. They won’t be back home until 4/9, so I really expect them to have their “A game” tonight. The Knicks beat the Blazers by nine in New York back on 12/7, so the Blazers will have that extra motivation as well. I’ll gladly take the red-hot, revenge-minded home team playing their only home game in a two week span. Lay it with Portland.

NBA Basketball Pick 3-30-10

March 30, 2010 at 8:15 pm ET by · Leave a Comment

My NBA pick for 3-30-10 is:

Phoenix Suns at Chicago Bulls – 8:05 p.m. ET

Bet #758 Chicago Bulls +3.5

The Suns may be on a seven-game win streak, but only two of those wins were on the road and they came against Minnesota (14-60 overall and 9-27 at home) and Golden State (21-52 overall and 16-22 at home). This trip to Chicago will be a much taller order for the Suns.

The Bulls have flat out owned Phoenix recently. Chicago has won the last three in this series and all by double digits. The Bulls are also fighting for their playoff lives. Chicago comes into this matchup just one game out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Derrick Rose missed four games with an injury, but the Bulls are 4-1 since his return. They’ve also covered seven of their last eight games.

Bottom line: It’s offense vs. defense and I usually favor the defensive team. The Suns defensive effort is usually lacking, and the Bulls should be able to take advantage. I also expect the Bulls to win the battle on the glass and that will go a long way in deciding this one. Find me an underdog that plays better defense than their opponent AND wins the battle on the boards, and I’m all over it. Grab the points with Chicago.

March Madness Pick 3-28-10

March 28, 2010 at 5:15 pm ET by · Leave a Comment

My March Madness pick for 3/28/10 is:

Baylor vs. Duke – 5:05 p.m. ET on CBS

Bet UNDER 139

The first thing that caught my eye in this one is the pace at which these teams play. Out of 347 Division I teams, Duke ranks #227 in tempo according to Pomeroy, while the Bears rank #238. The next thing that made me take the UNDER was looking at the scores of the games these two have played so far in this tournament. Average total points in Baylor’s three games: 130.7; Average total points in Duke’s three games: 121.7. Both teams are playing stellar defense in The Big Dance. Baylor is allowing 58.7 points per game on 37% shooting, while Duke is allowing 51.3 points per game on 36% shooting. Expect more slower pace and more solid D in this one. I have this total ending up somewhere between 132 and 135, so I’ll gladly take the UNDER.

March Madness Pick 3-26-10

March 26, 2010 at 9:45 pm ET by · Leave a Comment

My March Madness pick for 3-26-10 is:

Northern Iowa vs. Michigan State – 9:35 p.m. ET on CBS

Bet #873 Northern Iowa +1

Cinderella is a Panther this year. Northern Iowa is proving that they are for real. Any time you can beat Kansas while getting outrebounded AND shooting just 40% from the field, you must be a pretty solid team. The win over the Jayhawks only adds to UNI’s confidence and they now expect to beat everyone put in their path. Tonight, it’s the Spartans minus Kalin Lucas. Lucas ruptured an Achilles tendon in the first of Michigan State’s win over Maryland. They were lucky to win that game and they will sorely miss Lucas’ 14.8 points and leadership tonight.

Northern Iowa ranks 54th in offensive turnover percentage and 162nd in defensive turnover percentage; The Spartans rank 221st and 254th, respectively. The Panthers are also 7th in the nation in free throw percentage at 76.1% (Spartans hit 68.4%). Those extra possessions and points from the charity stripe are especially huge in a very slow paced game like this one figures to be. In what should be a close game, I see the Panthers winning by a bucket. Take Northern Iowa.
