RECAP

Picked up 4 Units of MLB profit last night, courtesy of two 2-Unit winners.  We started the night with an easy 9-3 win on the Twins over the White Sox.  It took Minny a little while to get going, but when they did…

We ended the night with a narrow 2-1 win on the Giants over the Dodgers.  Cain was every bit as good as I expected, and the Giants bats did just enough to get the W.

We’re now 14-5 (74%) on our last 19 MLB picks.

Time to see if we can bag college football winner #4 in a row…

RECAP

If you follow me closely, then you know just how much absolutely horrible luck we had in college football in Week 1.  I vowed that we would come back with a vengeance this weekend.  We’re off to a good start thanks to Houston (-19.5), as the Cougars hammered UTEP, 54-24.  Nice start to the weekend, but we’re not done yet.

College Football Bowl Pick 1-7-2010

January 7, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

My college football bowl pick on the BCS National Championship Game is:

BCS National Championship – Texas vs. Alabama – 8:35 p.m. ET on ABC

Bet: UNDER 46

NOTE: Please remember that, while this is the biggest game of the college football season, it is still only ONE game. Please bet accordingly. I bet the same amount on each game and I recommend you do the same.

I have dissected this game every which way possible. I’ve looked at each team’s stats in exactly 37 different categories. And after that extensive research, I’m completely convinced that the absolute best possible play on this game is on the UNDER.

We’ve seen a trend in these bowl games, and it’s that a great defense will seriously limit an explosive offense. We saw it in the Rose Bowl, where Ohio State’s defense limited Oregon’s potent offense to just 17 points. We saw it again in the Fiesta Bowl, where TCU and Boise State (two teams averaging over 40 points per game) were held to a combined 27 points (and seven of those points came on an INT return). And we saw it yet again in the Orange Bowl, where Iowa’s tough defense held the explosive Georgia Tech offense to seven points (the other TD came on an INT return). I see no reason why we won’t see the same scenario unfold tonight.

Texas comes in with the 3rd-ranked scoring offense (40.7 ppg), while Alabama brings the #25 scoring offense (31.7 ppg) into the contest. But these two have some VERY tough defenses. Alabama ranks #2 in the nation, allowing just 11 points per game. Texas is not far behind at #8, giving up just 15.2 points per game. And these defenses don’t give much against top competition either. Against bowl opponents, Texas allowed 15 points per game on 18.6 yards per point. Alabama gave up just 13 points per game on 21.1 yards per point against bowl opponents.

Not counting their season opener, Alabama’s toughest opponents were Ole Miss (25 total points scored), South Carolina (26), Tennessee (22), LSU (39), Auburn (47), and Florida (45). Texas’ toughest opponents were Oklahoma (29 total points scored) and Nebraska (25). This game also takes me back to last year’s BCS Title game, when the SEC’s Florida met the Big 12′s Oklahoma. We saw 38 points scored in that one. Again, I see no reason why we won’t see a similar result tonight. I really don’t expect to see more than 37 to 41 points scored tonight. Go UNDER.

NCAA Football Bowl Pick 1-5-2010

January 5, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

My NCAA football bowl pick for 1-5-2010 is:

Orange Bowl – Iowa vs. Georgia Tech – 8:10 p.m. ET on FOX

Bet: Georgia Tech -5.5

Usually, I’ll be the first one to jump on the better defensive team when getting points. I did it with Ohio State over Oregon, just to name one recent game. But, in my opinion, this game is a completely different animal.

First, I don’t care how much time Iowa has to prepare for Tech’s triple-option offense. They simply cannot simulate (in practices) the speed and precision that they will see in this game. Tech QB Josh Nesbitt is a dual threat, and that’s putting it mildly. Only six QBs have a better passing efficiency rating than Nesbitt, and only four have rushed for more yardage.

Second, I think Iowa’s lengthy layoff hurts them here. The Hawkeyes haven’t played since November 21st. Even worse, QB Ricky Stanzi hasn’t played since getting hurt in the first quarter against Northwestern on November 7th. That’s basically a two-month layoff for a QB that only had mediocre numbers to begin with (56% completions, 15 TDs, 14 INTs). On the other hand, Tech has played TWICE since then, and against two good teams that have already won bowl games this season (Georgia & Clemson). So I expect Georgia Tech to be much sharper from the get-go.

Third, I believe the motivational edge goes to Georgia Tech. This team got hammered 38-3 by LSU in last season’s Chick-fil-A Bowl. Now they get to come back and make a statement in a BCS game.

Bottom line: Iowa definitely has the better D, but they were gouged for 195 rushing yards by Michigan and 229 rushing yards by Ohio State. So they can definitely be gashed by Tech’s #2-ranked rushing offense (307 rushing yards per game). The Tech D is nothing special, so Iowa won’t get destroyed in this contest. But I do see a 14-point win for the Yellow Jackets. Lay it with Georgia Tech.
